A message shows as " waiting " when it has been received but not yet processed by the Filer. Common causes include:

High Volume: The Filer Daemon is working through a backlog.

Filer Daemon Stopped: If the Filer is not running, no messages can move from the queue to the database.

Holding Queue: The message is specifically waiting for a patient record lock to be released before it can file.

The Communications Daemon (Option D) is responsible for receiving the message; if it weren ' t running, the message wouldn ' t even be in the search results yet.

Workqueue rules in Bridges are generally not retroactive by default. Once you update a rule, only future occurrences of the error will be caught by the new logic (Option A). Any errors that were already in the workqueue from previous rules will remain there (Option C). To get past occurrences of the new error into the workqueue, you would need to run the Maintenance utility described in Question 26.

When you edit a message within the Bridges Messages activity, you are not overwriting the original message on the data queue. Instead, Bridges typically creates a new version of the message for resubmission or processing, preserving the original message ' s history and integrity for auditing purposes. The original data remains intact as part of the interface ' s message log.

Both Message Search and the Message Companion are patient-centric tools. Message Search allows for broad criteria including patient identifiers and timestamps across various interfaces. The Message Companion is a specialized tool often accessed directly from patient clinical records, allowing users to see all incoming and outgoing messages specifically for that patient within a defined timeframe.

HL7 provides a standard set of segments (like PID for Patient Identity or MSH for Message Header). However, to allow for site-specific data that doesn ' t fit into standard segments, HL7 reserves the letter " Z " for custom segments. Any segment starting with " Z " (e.g., ZPV, ZCD) is considered a local, non-standard extension defined by the specific healthcare organization or vendor.

Because of the high risk associated with misidentifying patients, Epic embeds " hard stops " in the Bridges configuration. For many standard interface types, the system requires Patient Validation to be active. If an organization decides to disable it, the administrator must provide a formal justification within the system before the interface is permitted to start.

The Interface System Defaults activity is the highest level of the configuration hierarchy. Settings defined here serve as the global " catch-all. " If a profile variable is defined in System Defaults and not overridden at the Specification or individual Interface level, that single setting applies across the entire Epic environment for all relevant interfaces.

When mapping data that exists as an Epic category list (such as Marital Status or Gender), the Auto-lookup feature significantly reduces manual build. When enabled, Bridges automatically pulls in the internal Epic values from the linked category list. The analyst then only needs to provide the corresponding external values from the vendor, rather than manually typing out every possible Epic internal ID and title.

The Criteria tab allows for precise filtering of logs. Analysts can search for errors associated with a specific message (Option B), filter for specific error codes to investigate a known issue (Option C), or isolate critical issues by filtering for a severity of " Failure " (Option D). Severity overrides (Option A) are a configuration setting rather than a standard search filter for the log report itself.

To efficiently manage investigation documentation, Epic provides the Error Steps Copy Utility within the Bridges Text-based menus. This utility allows administrators to take a set of resolution steps defined for one error/interface and copy them to others, preventing the need for manual duplicate entry.

The Message Search activity in Bridges is designed for flexibility. One of its core features is the ability to select multiple interface specifications or even all interfaces within a search. This allows an analyst to track a patient’s data across different systems (e.g., searching for both Lab and Pharmacy messages simultaneously) in a single consolidated result list.

The " Review Required " status acts as a safety hard-stop in Bridges. This status usually appears after a system upgrade or when a new interface is created from a template. Bridges prevents the daemons from starting as long as a variable is marked for review to ensure that an analyst has verified that the settings are appropriate for the specific environment, preventing potential data filing errors.

The Communications Daemon is only responsible for the transport of the message (connecting to the external system and moving raw data). The process of translating that data and filing it into Epic’s database (Chronicles) is handled by the Filer Daemon .

In Epic’s Identity framework, an ID Type is explicitly linked to a single Chronicles master file (e.g., EPT for patients, SER for providers). This one-to-one relationship ensures that the system knows exactly which master file to search when an ID of that type is received in a message. You cannot use a single ID Type definition to identify both a patient and a provider.

Patient Validation is a critical safety feature. Its primary purpose is to cross-reference multiple identifiers (like Name, DOB, and Sex) received in a message against the record found via the ID. If the ID points to " John Doe " but the message text says " Jane Smith, " validation will fail and prevent clinical data from filing to the wrong patient record , which is a major patient safety risk.
