A snapshot saves a read-only copy (called a snapshot) of a designated MTree at a specific time. You can use a snapshot as a restore point, and you can manage MTree snapshots and schedules and display information about the status of existing snapshots.

DD Replicator supports five replication topologies (one-to-one, one-to-one bidirectional, one-to-many,many-to-one, and cascaded).

In many-to-one replication, whether with MTree or directory, replication data flows from several source DD systems to a single destination DD system. This type of replication can be used to provide data recovery protection forseveral branch offices on a corporate headquarter’s IT system.

Step 1: To set up a simple DD VTL, use the Configuration Wizard.

Then, continue with enablingthe DD VTL, create libraries (or pools), and create and import tapes.

Procedure

• Make sure that you have a DD VTL license and that the file system is enabled.
• Select Virtual Tape Libraries > VTL Service.
• To the right of the Status area, select Enable.
• In the Enable Service dialog, select OK.
• After DD VTL has been enabled, note that Status will change to Enabled:Running in green.

You can create tapes in either a library or a pool.

Multiplexing, compression, and encryption of backup data were introduced to provide read parallelism as well as enhanced security and performance during backups. Backing up to a Data Domain system is inherently more secure than tape, and does not suffer performance degradation due to slow backup streams. Thus the recommendation is to disable any of these features when using a Data Domain system as the target for RMAN.
