PowerProtect Data Manager ' s virtual machine protection is built upon a foundation ofsnapshot-based technologyusing the VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection (VADP).

Snapshot Reliance:To perform an image-level backup, PPDM (via the VM Direct Engine) requests that VMware vCenter create a snapshot of the target VM. This freezes the virtual disks, allowing PPDM to read the data while the VM remains operational.

VADP Integration:If a VM ' s snapshot capability is compromised—for instance, due to existing broken snapshot chains, independent disks, or RDM (Raw Device Mapping) disks in physical mode—the backup will fail.

CBT (Changed Block Tracking):Effective backups also rely on VMware ' s CBT to identify only the blocks that have changed since the last backup. This is facilitated through the snapshot mechanism. Standard/Small Deployment:The minimum required space for a standard production deployment of the PPDM appliance is319 GB.

Storage Allocation:This 319 GB is used to house the operating system, the PPDM application binaries, the internal PostgreSQL database, and the Elasticsearch indexes used for search and analytics. For larger environments (e.g., more than 5,000 assets), the " Large " deployment option requires635 GB, but the baseline " minimum " for a standard functional appliance is 319 GB.

When performing a restore and recovery of anSAP HANAenvironment using PowerProtect Data Manager, the database state is a critical prerequisite.

Database Availability:For a tenant database to be recovered, the specific tenant must be in anOfflinestate. The system database remains online to coordinate the recovery process, but the target tenant cannot be actively processing transactions or have active user sessions while the data files and logs are being overwritten by the recovery process.

Workflow:Typically, the administrator uses SAP HANA Studio, Cockpit, or the HDBSQL command-line tool to stop the tenant database. Once stopped, the PPDM Backint agent can then proceed to restore the requested data backups and apply the necessary logs to reach the desired recovery point.

TheVM Direct Engine(also known as the vProxy) is the virtual appliance responsible for performing data movement during VMware backup and restore operations. While some attributes are " baked in " during the initial OVF deployment, others are logical configurations that can be adjusted.

Transport Mode:This setting determines how the engine accesses the virtual machine disks (e.g.,HotAdd,NBD, orNBDSSL). Administrators can modify the Transport Mode at any time after the engine has been added to PPDM to optimize performance based on the current network or storage environment.

Fixed Deployment Attributes:Attributes such as theNetwork,Data Store, and theESXi Hostwhere the appliance is physically located are part of the initial virtual machine deployment parameters in vCenter. If these underlying infrastructure components need to be changed, it typically requires a redeployment of the VM Direct Engine appliance to ensure proper alignment with the vSphere environment.

Other Modifiable Settings:In addition to Transport Mode, administrators can also modify the engine name and the maximum number of concurrent sessions after the engine has been registered.

TheVM Direct Engine(also known as the vProxy) is the protection engine used to back up and restore virtual machines in a VMware environment. Once a VM Direct Engine has been deployed and registered with PowerProtect Data Manager, certain configuration aspects are fixed to the virtual appliance ' s deployment, while others are adjustable.

Dynamic NAS (DNAS) and Slicing:To address this, PPDM uses theNAS Slicer. It analyzes the file system and breaks it into logical " slices " based on the distribution of data. This allows PPDM to process the file system in parallel using multiple protection engines.

Scaling:Knowing the number of files helps administrators determine how many protection engines (vProxies) are required to meet the backup window. While the " file system type " determines supportability, the " number of files " determines the performance strategy.

When integratingMicrosoft SQL Serverwith PowerProtect Data Manager, the most foundational requirement for a successful deployment is ensuring compatibility between theMicrosoft Application Agentand the database engine.

Version Compatibility:PPDM supports specific versions of MS-SQL (e.g., 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022). Each version has specific service pack requirements and underlying VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) writer behaviors that the PPDM agent must interact with to ensure application-consistent backups.

Feature Support:Certain advanced features, such as SQL Always On Availability Groups (AG) or specific recovery models, vary in support and configuration steps based on the MS-SQL version.

Pre-requisites:Before installing the agent, administrators must verify the version against theDell PowerProtect Data Manager Interoperability Matrix. An unsupported version may result in failed discovery, inability to trigger VSS snapshots, or metadata corruption.

For Microsoft SQL Server, achievingPoint-in-Time Recovery (PITR)and ensuring the database is in a consistent state requires the correct handling of transaction logs.

Transaction Log Sequence:If a database uses theFullorBulk-Loggedrecovery model, PPDM captures transaction logs between full/incremental backups. To restore to a specific moment, PPDM must first restore the latest full backup, followed by any cumulative or differential backups, and finally apply thetransaction logs in the exact chronological orderthey were created.

Consistency:Because transaction logs record the sequential changes to the database, skipping a log or applying them out of order would result in a corrupted or inconsistent database state. PPDM automates this orchestration, but the underlying principle of sequential log application is what ensures the database reaches a " transactionally consistent " state upon recovery.

To solve the challenges associated with backing up large NAS environments (which often contain millions of small files), PowerProtect Data Manager introducedDynamic NAS (DNAS) Protection.

A key technology within DNAS is theNAS Slicer. Instead of treating a large NAS share as a single serial stream, the NAS Slicer breaks the file system down into smaller, manageable units called " slices. "

Default Slice Size:By default, the NAS Slicer is configured to create slices of approximately100 GB.

Parallelism:These 100 GB slices allow PPDM to distribute the backup workload across multiple protection engines (vProxies) simultaneously. This parallel processing significantly improves throughput and reduces the time required to complete the backup (the backup window).
